The aim of this project was to develop an intelligent LED street lighting system. The system detects motion and is able to control the intensity of the LED light accordingly. The street lights are able to communicate with each other by means of a wireless mesh network. A street light brightens when it detects motion. The light also sends a message to neighbouring street lights, requesting that they brighten as well. This way, pedestrians are always surrounded by a safe circle of light.
Extras implemented in this project include an ambient light sensor (ALS) that turns the street lighting system on when it gets sufficiently dark, and PC base station software that is able to monitor and control individual street lights. Individual lights can be set to flash in the case of an emergency, warning oncoming motorists and pedestrians.
